EMS 1001 - Emergency Medical Service Education

The course will provide the principles, practices and procedures to assist the participant to become a quality instructor, thus ensuring the administration of quality patient care. It will also assist the instructor in the transition from clinician to educator. The course follows a logical progression beginning with the theory of the educational process, the methods of teaching, and finally; evaluative and administrative functions of the instructor. With special emphasis on vocational/technical training, this course is an investigation of Malcom Knowles’ theory of education and is devoted to the learning styles of adult students. It will focus on ways they process information, retain, and utilize new concepts and strategies. Specific techniques will be employed that identify theories associated with cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains of learning. General theories and concepts of education will be presented, with an emphasis placed on the allied health professions. There is a computer-based component to this course and students will need access to a computer and email. Students will be required to complete a minimum of 25 hours of student teaching under the supervision of an experienced emergency medical services (EMS) instructor.

Prerequisite: Current CT Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certification, or paramedic licensure
