MUS 2533 - Jazz Combo III

This course is the third in a sequence of college jazz combo. Students participating in the Jazz Ensemble course will gain exposure and experience in performing standard jazz repertoire as part of a jazz combo ensemble (e.g., the “Real Book”) and representing various periods and styles in jazz history (swing, bop, cool jazz, modal jazz, blues). During preparation of the musical selections, students will be required to listen to recordings of works by the composers and professional performers to gain an understanding of the historical significance and stylistic approach of selected performance repertoire. Students will develop jazz improvisation skills and ensemble techniques and will be required to practice assigned musical selections outside of class in order to be prepared to perform these pieces with the ensemble.

Prerequisite: MUS 1531  with a “C” or better; or permission by the instructor.

Additional Info: Music majors with emphasis in Jazz are required to take the course for four semesters.
