MUS 1101 - Music Theory I


Credits: 3

This course offers an exploration of the rudiments of music theory and analysis. Students will strengthen the skills needed to read and write music notation. Topics include: pitch, rhythm, meter, scale construction, keys, intervals, triads and seventh chords, chord inversions, basic counterpoint, voice leading, chorale part writing, and figured bass. The aural component of the material studied in this course is covered in MUS 1201 , therefore the courses must be taken concurrently.

Prerequisite: A very basic understanding of notation before beginning this class is highly recommended. Successful completion of MUS 1100  is recommended, but not required.
Corequisite: MUS 1201
