This course explores the constantly changing world of visual art, focusing on how this form of expression is defined and the varied ways in which it can be appreciated. Elements and principles of art are studied from a variety of identities, cultures, and historical periods. A visit to an instructor approved museum is an integral part of the course.

This course is an introduction to the fundamental elements and language of drawing. Perceptual skills will be developed through observational drawing. Emphasis on the representation of three dimensional form on the two dimensional picture plane, spatial relationships, perspective and composition. Students will create a portfolio of expressive drawings including still life, perspective studies and a self-portrait.

ART 1130  Figure Drawing I  (3 Credits)  
An introduction to life drawing, encompassing both traditional techniques and a contemporary approach to the representation of the figure. Includes the nude figure, the clothed figure, portraiture and the figure in a still-life environment. This course is based in both anatomical and expressive approaches to human figure drawing. A variety of media will be explored, including color and wet media, along with instruction in composition, proportion and foreshortening principles. Students will work extensively from the live model. Studio: 6 hours per week.

An examination of color theory and terminology. This course is designed for Fine Art, Photography, and Graphic Design majors. It is an exploration and study of color relationships as they apply to diverse media. An introduction to black and white film/darkroom photography, including camera operation, composition, film processing, printing and print finishing techniques. ART 1420  Darkroom Photography II  (3 Credits)  
Through demonstrations, assignments, critiques and work on a final themed portfolio, students will review techniques, develop new skills and further explore the creative/expressive side of photography. Students will review camera settings and operations, and darkroom-based film and print processing. Students will be introduced to medium or large format cameras and studio or on-location lighting techniques. Students will also look at and talk about a broad range of photographic imagery while exploring the history of photography and photography's place in culture and society. Students will be encouraged to develop a personal, expressive style in addition to mastering a range of practical photographic techniques while they assemble a cohesive, thematic, exhibition-quality portfolio. An introduction to digital photography including camera operation, file formats and management and image editing using Adobe Photoshop. Through demonstrations, assignments, critiques, a survey of imagery and a final portfolio, students will be introduced to the basic vocabulary, concepts, tools and expressive possibilities of digital photography. Students should have access to a digital single lens reflex camera with manual, aperture and shutter priority exposure modes or a similar mirrorless digital camera. Basic computer and photographic experience preferred.

ART 1460  Digital Photography II  (3 Credits)  
Through demonstrations, assignments, critiques and work on a final themed portfolio, students will review techniques, develop new skills and further explore the creative/expressive side of photography. Students will review DSLR camera settings and operations, file management using Adobe Bridge and/or Lightroom, RAW image processing, and a non-destructive post-processing workflow with Adobe Photoshop. Local edits using Photoshop masks will be emphasized. Students will also look at and talk about a broad range of photographic imagery while exploring the history of photography and photography's place in culture and society. Students will be encouraged to develop a personal, expressive style in addition to mastering a range of practical photographic techniques while they assemble a cohesive, thematic, exhibition-quality portfolio. An introductory course investigating digital video as an extension of the fine arts and digital media. Formal attributes, which make up the language of video, including time-lines, sound, content, and composition, will be investigated as tools of expression and devises for creating meaning. Basic production techniques such as story boarding, cinematography, lighting, and editing will be acquired through creative problem solving. Historical and contemporary video art will be referenced, and critical analyses will be applied to student productions. ART 2094  Cooperative Education  (3 Credits)  
The Cooperative Education Internship affords students the opportunity to build on their classroom studies in an environment that focuses on professional development. Students select an internship host company that offers the opportunity to develop skills in a field related to their study in studio art/graphic design, including corporate in-house design, publishing, freelance design, newspapers and design agencies as well as related positions in other industry. Students will attend a preparatory class for the first week of the term and meet on-line each week. Students are required to work a total of 120 hours during the term at a host company.
Prerequisites: To be eligible for the internship course a student must be in the final term of his/her art degree program having completed 15 credits in their field and have a GPA of 3.0 or greater. Permission to take this course must be granted by the program coordinator.
