CHNS 1000 Getting Started in Chinese (1 Credits)
This course introduces students to the essentials of the Mandarin Chinese language. This course will expose students to basic speaking and listening skills. Vocabulary needed to interact in Mandarin Chinese using simple phrases and common expressions is presented.

CHNS 1011 Elementary Chinese I (see course description for placement information) (4 Credits)
An introduction to the Chinese language and Chinese-speaking cultures with emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to prepare students for successful entry into the target language. This is a beginning course for students who have had very limited or no prior study of this language. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.

Prerequisites: Students with previous language experience must complete a Language and Culture placement test or permission of the instructor.

CHNS 1012 Elementary Chinese II (4 Credits)
A continuation of Elementary Chinese I, this course builds upon previous introduction to the Chinese language and Chinese-speaking cultures with a continued emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This is the second part to the beginning sequence for students who have had some prior study of this language either in high school, Elementary Chinese I or life experience. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.
Prerequisites: Students must have earned a grade of C- or higher in CHNS 1011, complete a Language and Culture placement test , or obtain permission of the instructor.
