This course prepares students for the reading and writing demands in Composition and other college-level courses by integrating reading, writing, and critical thinking. Texts will serve as models and sources for students to refine their skills in exposition, interpretation, and argumentation. This course does not satisfy an English requirement or an elective in any degree program, nor do its credits count toward graduation.

ENG 0940 Introduction to Advanced Reading and Writing (4 Credits)

Grammar for College and Professional Writing offers focused instruction in English grammar as it applies to writing situations. Students learn to identify parts of speech and sentence structure; avoid common errors by correctly applying grammar rules; identify commonly confused words and idiomatic expressions; and edit for conciseness and accuracy. Emphasis is placed on building knowledge and skills in the context of actual writing tasks. Graded on a Pass/Fail basls.

Creative Writing: Novel is a continuation of narrative writing skills begun in Creative Writing: fiction. The focus, however, is exclusively on the techniques of writing extended pieces of fiction (novels/novellas). Students will work with their own manuscripts, participate in peer review workshops, and discuss elements of the craft such as character and conflict, dialogue and point of view, pacing and plot.

ENG 2127 Creative Writing: Mixed Genre (3 Credits)
This course is a continuation of work on creative writing skills begun in ENG 2100 Creative Writing. The focus in this course is exclusively on the techniques of writing mixed genre work. In the mixed or multi-genre writing, authors aren't writing within a particular genre, such as poetry or fiction or non-fiction, but instead using elements of multiple genres to tell their stories. Authors might include photographs, drawings, electronic elements, or music, as well as the various literary genres to tell their story or generate their experience. This course would introduce students to the exciting possibilities inherent in writing this way. Students will work on their own pieces while studying examples of the form and discussing such elements of craft as character and conflict, dialogue, point of view, and the relationship between the different genres included in the work.
