FREN 1011 Elementary French I (4 Credits)
An introduction to the French language and French-speaking cultures with emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to prepare students for successful entry into the target language. This is a beginning course for students who have had very limited or no prior study of this language. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.

Prerequisites: Students with previous language experience must complete a Language and Culture placement test or permission of the instructor.

FREN 1012 Elementary French II (4 Credits)
A continuation of Elementary French I, this course builds upon previous introduction to the French language and French-speaking cultures with a continued emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This is the second part to the beginning sequence for students who have had some prior study of this language either in high school, Elementary French I or life experience. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.
Prerequisites: Students must have earned a grade of C- or higher in FREN 1011, complete a Language and Culture placement test , or obtain permission of the instructor.

FREN 1021 Beginning French Conversation II (3 Credits)
This is a second semester introductory course for students who wish to continue to develop their basic conversational skills in French. It focuses on everyday situations that students may encounter when living or traveling in French-speaking environments and dealing with French-speaking people in the United States. This is a beginning level course designed for students who have no more than 1 year of elementary French or have completed FREN 1011. It emphasizes practical, everyday situations and provides a variety of opportunities to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing, skills while enhancing cultural understanding and appreciation of the French-speaking world.
FREN 2011 Intermediate French I (4 Credits)
This course is for students who have already attained a working knowledge of the language. Students continue to develop and strengthen speaking and listening comprehension and reading and writing skills, as well as learn more about French-speaking cultures. Students are introduced to cultural and literary materials that will develop an appreciation of the arts, history, culture, and the literature of French-speaking peoples and create an awareness of cultural, social, and linguistic differences and similarities. Instruction focuses on oral and written communication. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.
Prerequisites: A grade of C- or higher in FREN 1012, or complete a Language and Culture placement test , or permission of the instructor.

FREN 2012 Intermediate French II (4 Credits)
This course is for students who have already attained a working knowledge of the language by either completing 4 years of high school French, Intermediate French I, or the equivalent. Students continue to develop and strengthen speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing skills, as well as learn more about French-speaking cultures. Students are introduced to cultural and literary materials that will develop an appreciation of the arts, history, culture, and the literature of French-speaking peoples and create an awareness of cultural, social, and linguistic differences and similarities. FREN 2030 Intermediate French Composition (3 Credits)
In this high intermediate course, students continue to develop deeper fluency in French language skills with an emphasis on academic reading and writing. Students continue to refine reading comprehension, writing proficiency, listening, and speaking skills, and grammatical accuracy. Assigned college level readings, which may include whole works and academic writings, form the basis for small and whole class discussions and writing assignments. Students learn to appropriately integrate multiple sources into a research-based paper. Collaborative activities help students further develop linguistic clarity and accuracy, academic vocabulary, critical thinking, and development of ideas appropriate for academic study in French.

FREN 2198 Special Topics in French (3 Credits)
This course covers topics of special interest in French. Topics vary by campus and semester but focus on literature and/or cultural study.
