JAPN 1000  Getting Started in Japanese I  (1 Credits)  
This course introduces students to the essentials of the Japanese language. This course will expose students to basic speaking and listening skills. Vocabulary needed to interact in Japanese using simple phrases and common expressions is presented.
JAPN 1011  Elementary Japanese I  (4 Credits)  
An introduction to the Japanese language and Japanese-speaking cultures with emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to prepare students for successful entry into the target language. This is a beginning course for students who have had very limited or no prior study of this language. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component. Prerequisites: Students with previous language experience must complete a Language and Culture placement test or permission of the instructor.

JAPN 1012  Elementary Japanese II  (4 Credits)  
A continuation of Elementary Japanese I, this course builds upon previous introduction to the Japanese language and Japanese-speaking cultures with a continued emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This is the second part to the beginning sequence for students who have had some prior study of this language either in high school, Elementary Japanese I or life experience. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.
Prerequisites: Students must have earned a grade of C- or higher in JAPN 1011, or complete a Language and Culture placement test , or obtain permission of the instructor.

JAPN 2011  Intermediate Japanese I  (4 Credits)  
This course is for students who have already attained a working knowledge of the language by either completing 4 years of high school Japanese, Intermediate Japanese I, or the equivalent. Students continue to develop and strengthen speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing skills, as well as learn more about Japanese culture. Students are introduced to cultural and literary materials that will develop an appreciation of the arts, history, culture, and the literature of Japanese peoples and create an awareness of cultural, social, and linguistic differences and similarities. Instruction focuses on oral and written communication. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language component.
Prerequisites: A grade of C- or higher in JAPN 1012 or Languages and Cultures placement assessment
