MUS 1000 History and Appreciation of Western Music (3 Credits)
This course is an entry-level music class that surveys the history of classical Western music and forms a foundation for intelligent and appreciative listening through knowledge of the characteristics, media, and structure of music, major choral and instrumental works, musical styles, interpretation, and the principles of aesthetics. Students will engage in lectures, class discussion, recordings, and attendance at live performances.

MUS 1001 Music History - Medieval-Baroque (3 Credits)
This course is a survey of western European music from the Medieval Period through Baroque with an emphasis given to stylistic forms (i.e. plainchant, motet, opera, fugue), composers (i.e. Palestrina, Corelli, Morley, Vivaldi, Bach, Handel), and the cultural/societal impact on the music. The course will also review the elemental components of music (i.e. pitch, melody, rhythm, texture, and harmony). Students will be required to write two concert reports after attending two live performances featuring works from the periods covered in the class.

MUS 1002 Music History - Classical-Contemporary (3 Credits)
This course is a survey of western music from Classical through Modern periods, with a review to the concept of sound and the elements of music (i.e. rhythm, melody, harmony, texture and form). Emphasis is given to major developments in music along with the cultural and sociological changes, which gave rise to new vocal and instrumental genres. Students will be required to write two concert reports after attending two live performances featuring works from the periods covered in the class.

This course offers an opportunity to study a variety of ethnic music from around the world within the context of the societies that create it. While the primary focus will be limited to certain selected regions and traditions, the overall scope will be broad in that these regions represent many different countries. The approach to the course material is interdisciplinary as it incorporates aspects of the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

MUS 1008 Today's Music: Gospel, Ragtime, Blues, Jazz (3 Credits)
An examination of the development of American music from its roots in the secular and sacred traditions of the late 1800's and their impact on the pre-jazz forms of ragtime, brass bands, and blues to the jazz forms of swing, bebop, cool and fusion. The course will also explore music developed out of American rural and urban settings (i.e., shaped note singing to urban gospel). Emphasis will be given to the stylistic characteristics of each form and their impact on current music styles.

MUS 1009 History and Appreciation of Jazz (3 Credits)
A historical study of jazz from its early roots to the players today. The course looks at the evolution of jazz and how it has been influenced by technology and society. Students will examine the artists and music in jazz today, and the role of jazz in the past. This course will look at various audio and video performances of jazz musicians and ensembles to analyze their effect on this genre of music. Students will attend live performances and discuss them in class, with the performing musicians when possible. Topics covered include the New Orleans era, the Big Band era, Swing, Bebop and Hard Bop, the Bossa Nova era, and jazz today.

MUS 1010 Rock and Roll History and Appreciation (3 Credits)
A survey of the evolution of rock music and the origins, characteristics, stylistic development, and cultural/social perspectives. The course will present the major historical developments of Rock and Roll, as well as related popular musical styles. From its roots in rhythm and blues, to the use of sampling, the class will explore the development of style, instrumentation, playing techniques, and the cultural conditions that helped to define the major trends in Rock and Roll.

This course offers an introduction to the most rudimentary and ubiquitous aspects of the academic discipline of music. Students will develop skills that will allow them to read, write, and perform music. Thus, while not required for or limited to music majors, this class will prepare students for subsequent study in music theory and ear training. Topics include: notation, pitch, rhythm, meter, scale construction, key signatures, triads, inversions, and basic sight-singing.

MUS 1101 Music Theory I (3 Credits)
This course offers an exploration of the rudiments of music theory and analysis. Students will strengthen the skills needed to read and write music notation. Topics include: pitch, rhythm, meter, scale construction, keys, intervals, triads and seventh chords, chord inversions, basic counterpoint, voice leading, chorale part writing, and figured bass. The aural component of the material studied in this course is covered in MUS 1201, therefore the courses must be taken concurrently.
Prerequisites: A very basic understanding of notation before beginning this class is highly recommended. Successful completion of MUS 1100 is recommended, but not required.

MUS 1201 Music Ear-Training I (1 Credits)
This course covers the aural component of MUS 1101. The goal of Ear Training I is to acquire the skills necessary to make intelligent and competent musicians. This course will focus on three major areas; sight singing, rhythmic reading, and dictation. Students are introduced to solfege and moveable do in major and minor keys, Curwen hand signs, stick notation, and score reading, and conducting. Students will also develop their aural skills with rhythm exercises, music dictations, interval singing, scale singing, chordal and ensemble singing. Pentatonic music and music in Major and minor tonalities will be explored.
Prerequisites: A basic understanding of notation before beginning this class is highly recommended. Successful completion of MUS 1100 is recommended before taking this course, but not required.

MUS 1202 Music Ear-Training II (1 Credits)
This course is a continuation of MUS 1201. Ear Training II is considered to be the aural lab component of MUS 1102, therefore this course must be taken concurrently with MUS 1102. This course explores more advanced materials using solfege and moveable do in major and minor keys and Curwen hand signs: all Intervals (ascending and descending), scales (major, minor in all 3 types, chromatic), triads (MmdA) in all inversions, and 7th chords are sung and identified. Practice singing in two and three parts in treble and bass clefs is included as well as conducting and Sing and Play. This course also includes singing and dictation of one-part and two-parts melodies in major and minor (all 3 types). Sight-singing in compound triple meter, keyboard harmony and simple chord progressions with few inversions are introduced (aural identification of diatonic harmonic functions).
Prerequisites: MUS 1201 with a "C" or higher, or by permission of the instructor.

This course provides beginning piano instruction and application/reinforcement of MUS 1101 on the keyboard: read music in treble and bass clef, and play: intervals up to an octave; chords of all qualities (major, minor, augmented, diminished: blocked and broken); 8-notes scales in major and minor of Group 1 (up to 2 octaves in parallel and one in contrary motion); chord progressions; and repertoire of varied eras. Students will also work on: transposition, melodic harmonization, improvisation, and harmonic analysis.

This course is the second in a sequence of a performance ensemble in which students will study and perform choral repertoire representing a variety of styles and historical periods, from the renaissance to the postmodern age. This course exposes students to a hands-on quality experience in the arts. In addition to regular rehearsals, students will participate in a dress rehearsal as well as a concert showcase. Chorale II is intended for music majors who are pursuing advanced study in voice and/or are satisfying their performance ensemble requirement for the degree. In level II, students are expected to display developing leadership skills.

MUS 1511 Madrigal/Chamber Singer I (1 Credits)
The primary purposes of this academic course are the development of student's musicianship and their vocal technique, as well as the study and performance of a variety of musical styles and historical periods, from the renaissance to the postmodern age, through the medium of choral ensemble. The course includes regular rhythmic, diction, sight-reading and vocalizing exercises, as well as learning of their own soprano, alto, tenor, baritone or bass part. This advanced course is open to all students in the college and requires passing a brief audition. Previous choral experience, knowledge of music notation and good sight-reading skills are required. In addition to regular rehearsals, students will participate in at least one performance each semester. This course exposes students to a hands-on quality experience in the arts. Students registered for this course must be also registered for a Chorale Ensemble course (I, II, III, or IV) or obtain permission by the instructor.

This course is the second in a sequence of advanced choral performance ensemble. The primary purposes of this academic course are the development of student's musicianship and their vocal technique, as well as the study and performance of a variety of musical styles and historical periods, from the renaissance to the postmodern age ,through the medium of choral ensemble. The course includes regular rhythmic, diction, sight-reading and vocalizing exercises, as well as learning of their own soprano, alto, tenor, baritone or bass part. Previous choral experience :knowledge of music notation, vocal production, and good sight-reading skills are required. During preparation of the musical selections, students will be required to listen to recordings of works by the composers and professional performers to gain an understanding of the historical significance and stylistic approach of selected performance repertoire. Students will develop jazz improvisation skills and ensemble techniques and will be required to practice assigned musical selections outside of class in order to be prepared to perform these pieces with the ensemble.

This course is the second in a sequence of a chamber performance ensemble. Students participating in the Chamber Ensemble course will gain exposure and experience in performing standard classical repertoire as part of a classical chamber ensemble. During preparation of the musical selections, students will be required to listen to recordings of works by the composers and professional performers to gain an understanding of the historical significance and stylistic approach of selected performance repertoire. Students will develop ensemble performance skills and ensemble techniques and will be required to practice assigned musical selections outside of class in order to be prepared to perform these pieces with the ensemble.

MUS 1540 Drumming and Percussion Ensemble (3 Credits)
Through ensemble playing, students will learn a variety of traditional rhythms such as African, Latin, Indonesian (Gamelan), Middle Eastern, etc. Various percussion instruments and playing techniques will be studied, including improvisation, and some cultural aspects associated with the instruments. Students will also learn how to use found objects as instruments. Students should make an effort to obtain a drum for use in the ensemble.

This course is an introduction to the art and science of music production. Current practices, elements, and tools for electronic mixing and mastering will be defined and explored. The course will lay a thorough foundation of industry-standard mixing and mastering skills, EQ, compression, using MIDI samples, electronic synthesis, various plugins, flexible and current as the dynamics of the industry shift.

Designed for the non-musician, this course focuses on the composition, creation, performing, and recording of music using modern production techniques. This course is designed to provide knowledge of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as it applies to singers, teaching them not only IPA but also how to form vowels and consonants (the anatomy of the voice). This course is the third in a required sequence of four music theory classes for music majors. Students will continue the study of harmony and voice leading through writing and analysis. In addition to secondary dominant and leading tone chords, students will learn to recognize and write Neapolitan chords, augmented 6thchords, modal mixture, and the beginning elements of late romantic harmonic vocabulary. Additionally, students will study forms including binary, ternary, sonata, and fugue. This course is a continuation of MUS 1202. Ear Training III is considered to be the aural lab component of MUS 2103, therefore this course must be taken concurrently with MUS 2103. This course explores more advanced materials using solfege (moveable do and modified do in major and minor keys) and Curwen hand signs. Solfege singing is honed and students will be expected to demonstrate strong sight-singing of diatonic harmony. In addition to reinforcing previous material, this course introduces the whole tone scale, complex rhythmic exercises (subdivision of simple and compound meters), atonal melodies, modes and their transpositions, C clefs, Bach Chorales, and more complex harmonic progressions which include secondary dominants, leading tone chords, the Neapolitan chord and augmented sixth chords in major and minor keys. Individual and ensemble singing up to 5 parts are required in this course, as well as Sing and Play and Dictation exercises. Melodies for singing and dictation gradually incorporate chromatic alterations, and Chorale in four-parts need to include Roman numerals and the soprano and bass parts notated.

This course is the third in a sequence of a chamber performance ensemble. Students participating in the Chamber Ensemble course will gain exposure and experience in performing standard classical repertoire as part of a classical chamber ensemble. During preparation of the musical selections, students will be required to listen to recordings of works by the composers and professional performers to gain an understanding of the historical significance and stylistic approach of selected performance repertoire. Students will develop ensemble performance skills and ensemble techniques and will be required to practice assigned musical selections outside of class in order to be prepared to perform these pieces with the ensemble.

MUS 2533 Jazz Combo III (1 Credits)
This course is the third in a sequence of college jazz combo. Students participating in the Jazz Ensemble course will gain exposure and experience in performing standard jazz repertoire as part of a jazz combo ensemble (e.g., the Real Book) and representing various periods and styles in jazz history (swing, bop, cool jazz, modal jazz, blues). During preparation of the musical selections, students will be required to listen to recordings of works by the composers and professional performers to gain an understanding of the historical significance and stylistic approach of selected performance repertoire. Students will develop jazz improvisation skills and ensemble techniques and will be required to practice assigned musical selections outside of class in order to be prepared to perform these pieces with the ensemble.
Prerequisites: MUS 1531 with a "C" or higher; or permission by the instructor.

MUS 2534 Jazz Combo IV (1 Credits)
This course is the fourth and last in a sequence of college jazz combo. MUS 2603 Electronic Music Composition II (3 Credits)
A continuation of MUS*218: Electronic Music Composition I. This course is an exploration of techniques used in electronic music composition. Topics covered include further exploration in the editing of digital recording using industry-standard sequencing software; the mix, mastering and exporting of digital recordings; and the composition of a music score for a video. Students will also be introduced to the various aspects of operating a recording studio which will include the type and function of equipment used.

MUS 2604 Advanced Music Mixing and Processing (3 Credits)
This is an advanced-level course in audio and music mixing and signal processing. Students will be expected to take pre-recorded multi-track audio and music production files and edit, mix, process, and master them at a professional level. Topics will include advanced-level sound design, multi-track digital mixing and signal processing, including audio compression, equalization, filtering, reverb, echo, delay, flanging, modulation, pitch shifting, chorus, and other digital effects.

MUS 2605 Principles of Sound Recording (3 Credits)
This course is an advanced study of the techniques and methodologies used in studio and live recording of sound and music. Students will be expected to work both individually and collaboratively in the recording and mastering of live or studio music recording projects. Topics will include advanced knowledge of multi-track recording, studio acoustics, sound design, digital mixing consoles, microphone placement techniques, signal processors, monitoring, talkback systems, and studio session procedures.

MUS 2606 Music for Film, TV, and Other Media (3 Credits)
A practical course that focuses on music composition as it relates to digital studio creation for the express purpose of composing for sundry media genres to include, but not limited to film, television, commercials, documentaries, and video games music scores.
Prerequisites: MUS 2603 or by Music Program Coordinator's approval. Demonstrated knowledge and success in music theory, rudimentary acoustic composition, as well as digital music software programs are highly recommended.
