Science (SCI)

This course teaches critical issues in science by studying recent developments and critical issues in various scientific disciplines.? Course content will be topical and dependent upon both current scientific issues and the areas of interest of course participants. 

This non-science majors course with lab surveys content in biology, physics, and chemistry with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary nature of these fields of science and how they relate to everyday life. Topics will include the scientific method and process of science, heat, refraction, energy, acids and bases, electrolytes, microscopy, cellular structure, heredity, and basics of ecology.  Laboratory experiments will both integrate and reinforce material discussed in lecture, as well as foster collaboration and teamwork among students. Students should check for transferability with the institution they wish to transfer to if they take an online lab. 

A study of how the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Physics meld to for the field of forensic science. The course will focus on developing the scientific vocabulary necessary for investigators to communicate with scientists. This course is meant to assist students who are pursuing a career in criminal justice. Emphasis of the course will be placed on scientific analysis of data rather than detective work. Students will learn to appreciate how the major fields of science are utilized in solving crimes. Students may take either CJS/SCI 2260 or CJS/SCI 2850. Students cannot earn credit for both of these classes.
