SPAN 1011 Elementary Spanish I (4 Credits)
An introduction to the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures with emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to prepare students for successful entry into the target language. This is a beginning course for students who have had very limited or no prior study of this language. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.

Prerequisites: Students with previous language experience must complete a Language and Culture placement test or permission of the Instructor.

SPAN 1012 Elementary Spanish II (4 Credits)
A continuation of Elementary Spanish I, this course builds upon previous introduction to the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures with a continued emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. This is the second part to the beginning sequence for students who have had some prior study of this language either in high school, Elementary Spanish I or life experience. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.
Prerequisites: SPAN 1011 with a C- or higher or complete a Language and Culture placement test , or obtain permission of the Instructor.

SPAN 1013 Elementary Spanish I-II (8 Credits)
An introduction to the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures with emphasis on the development of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to prepare students for successful entry into the target language. This is a beginning course for students who have had very limited or no prior study of this language. This is an eight-credit course with an embedded language lab component. This is an intensive beginning Spanish course in which two college semesters of Spanish are completed in one semester.
Prerequisites: Students with previous language experience must complete a Language and Culture placement test or permission of the Instructor.

SPAN 1014 Spanish for Health Personnel (4 Credits)
A course containing the same language skills development as SPAN 1012 with an emphasis on vocabulary and content related to the medical field. It provides medical personnel with the basic Spanish skills to deal with Spanish speaking patients in the health care delivery system. It also describes the diverse Spanish cultures and explains their role in health idioms and phraseology. This is the second part to the beginning sequence for students who have had some prior study of this language either in high school, Elementary Spanish I, or life experience. This is a four-credit course with an embedded language lab component.
Prerequisites: Students must have earned a grade of C- or higher in SPAN 1011, complete a Language and Culture placement test , or obtain permission of the instructor.

SPAN 1020 Beginning Spanish Conversation I (3 Credits)
This is an introductory course for students who wish to develop basic conversational skills in Spanish. It focuses on everyday situations that students may encounter when living or traveling in Spanish-speaking environments and dealing with Spanish-speaking people in the United States. This is a beginning level course designed for students who have no more than 1 year of elementary Spanish. It emphasizes practical, everyday solutions and provides a variety of opportunities to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while enhancing cultural understanding and appreciation of the Spanish-speaking world.

SPAN 1021 Beginning Spanish Conversation II (3 Credits)
This is a second semester introductory course for students who wish to continue developing their basic conversational skills in Spanish. It focuses on everyday situations that students may encounter when living or traveling in Spanish-speaking environments and dealing with Spanish-speaking people in the United States. This is a beginning level course designed for students who have no more than 1 year of elementary Spanish or have completed Beginning Spanish Conversation I. It emphasizes practical. everyday situations and provides a variety of opportunities to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while enhancing cultural understanding and appreciation of the Spanish-speaking world.
Prerequisites: A grade of C- or higher in SPAN 1020 - Beginning Spanish Conversation I, SPAN 1011 - Elementary Spanish I, SPAN 1012 - Elementary Spanish II, or SPAN 1013 - Elementary Spanish I-II or permission of instructor

SPAN 1030 Elementary Spanish Composition I (3 Credits)
In this high elementary course, students continue to develop writing skills through vocabulary development, spelling exercises, and composition. This course is designed to develop and refine writing skills and analysis through original compositions with attention to common problems of accentuation, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

SPAN 2010 Intermediate Spanish I for Heritage Speakers (4 Credits)
This intermediate course is designed for heritage speakers of Spanish whose primary experience in the language comes from non-academic settings and who want to continued developing their oral and written proficiency. Through interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational tasks, students will engage with a range of linguistic registers used in both informal and formal contexts.
Throughout the course, students will strengthen their oral fluency, expand control or formal academic and professional registers, and increase accuracy in their writing. By the end of the course, students will demonstrate the ability to use different varieties of Spanish appropriately across context and develop sociolinguistic awareness by examining the diverse experiences of Hispanic/Latine communities in the United States and abroad. This is a four-credit course with embedded language lab component.
Prerequisites: A grade of C- or better in SPAN 1012, an appropriate Spanish placement score and be able to communicate orally in Spanish, or obtain permission of the instructor

SPAN 2030 Intermediate Spanish Composition I (3 Credits)
In this high intermediate course, students continue to develop deeper fluency in Spanish language skills with an emphasis on academic reading and writing. Students continue to refine reading comprehension, writing proficiency, listening, and speaking skills, and grammatical accuracy. Assigned college level readings, which may include whole works and academic writings, form the basis for small and whole class discussions and writing assignments. Students learn to appropriately integrate multiple sources into a research-based paper. Collaborative activities help students further develop linguistic clarity and accuracy, academic vocabulary, critical thinking, and development of ideas appropriate for academic study in Spanish.

SPAN 2095 Teaching Assistant in Spanish (4 Credits)
In this assistantship, students will assist a faculty member in conducting an academic course offered in the field of Spanish. Students may lead discussion groups, work with the individuals, organize field trips, make presentations, conduct research, coordinate tutoring sessions, evaluate and revise material collaborate with the class, and/or other work to be arranged based on learning objectives.

This course is an advanced systematic review of the Spanish language and Spanish speaking cultures, which continues the gradual development of the four basic skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis will be placed on reading and writing, with a targeted review of advanced grammatical structures as tools for interpretive reading, analytical writing, and oral expression in Spanish. Prose and poetry from a wide array of Latin American and Spanish writers will be introduced to enhance writing abilities. This course is designed for students versed in conversational Spanish and for Spanish speakers.
Prerequisites: A grade of C-or better in SPAN 2012, a grade of 5 on the Spanish Language and Culture AP exam , placement test , or permission of the instructor.
