Surgical Technology-HHC (SURH)

This course provides introduction to the basic concepts, principles and theories of aseptic technique related to the non-sterile and sterile responsibilities of the surgical technologist. This course includes an introduction to wound classes/closure/healing/hemostasis, biomedicine, diagnostic procedures, emergency situations and all hazards preparation. The course instructs the student in the principles and skills required to assist in surgical procedures for general, obstetric/gynecologic, genitourinary, plastic, orthopedic, ear, nose, pharynx/larynx, ophthalmic, oral and maxillofacial, cardiothoracic, peripheral vascular and neurosurgery. This class includes a clinical laboratory component.

The course provides instruction in the professional role and skill sets required of the surgical technologist in the peri-operative environment. It includes discussion and application of aseptic technique as related to the supplies and equipment used during the course of surgery. This course will cover the responsibilities of the surgical technologist in the first scrub role during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of the surgical procedure. This class includes a laboratory component.

This course is for the education of surgical technologists. Medical Terminology introduces the surgical technology (ST)student to the basic concepts of building the medical word from its component parts of prefix, suffix and word roots. Through word analysis and exercises, the student will learn the anatomical, physiological, pathological and surgical/clinical terms as they pertain to body cells, tissue and systems. Strong emphasis will be placed on diseases and surgical intervention terms to enhance the performance of the surgical technologist in the healthcare setting.

This course provides introduction to patient care concepts, communication and teamwork required to assist the surgical technologist in the operating room environment. Course content includes an overview of the various levels of credentialing, hospital organization and healthcare professional organizations. It will cover the legal/ethical/moral responsibilities, including liability and scope of practice, in the surgical technologist role. This course includes mock surgery in a clinical lab setting and orientation to the Hartford Healthcare System facilities.

This course is to educate students in the clinical practice of surgical technology. This course is designed to provide the student with individualized surgical case scrub experience in the surgical technologist first/second scrub role. Emphasis is placed on developing quality patient care concepts and proficiency of Surgical Technologist Level I Skills as necessary for participation in basic surgical procedures. This course will offer the student opportunities to apply learned didactic and clinical skills to the scrub role of the surgical technologist. The student will spend 24 hours each week, for a duration of five weeks, in the clinical setting advancing their skill set as the surgical technologist in the scrub role. Upon successful course completion, the student will be able to demonstrate competency in all aspects of Surgical Technologist Level I Skills of perioperative practice.

This course is for the education of surgical technologists. The focus is on topics related to pathophysiology and pharmacology as identified in the current edition of the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology(ST). The ST student will be introduced to the basic concept of disease as a deviation from the body's normal homeostatic state and its ability to function properly. Through discussion, analysis and research, the student will learn the anatomic and physiologic anomalies each body system undergoes in response to the disease process. The ST student will be introduced to the basics of pharmacology and anesthesia as it relates to the surgical technologist role in the Operating Room. The most important points of pharmacology/anesthesia will include drug handling, prevention of drug errors, a basic understanding of drug categories, important anesthesia concepts, types of anesthesia, complications/adverse reactions and the related perioperative role of the surgical technologist.

This course is to educate students in the professional practice of surgical technology. This course prepares the surgical technology student to transition successfully from the classroom to the perioperative setting as a competent, entry-level surgical technologist professional. Students will be taught how to develop a professional portfolio and enhance interview skills. The course emphasizes review of surgical technology principles and practices and test taking strategies in preparation for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) exam.

This course is to educate students in the clinical practice of surgical technology. This course is designed to provide the student with individualized, surgical case experience in the scrub role of the surgical technologist. Emphasis is placed on demonstrating proficiency in skills necessary for advancing participation in complex surgical procedures. This course will afford the student the opportunity to build on (ST) skills learned in Surgical Technologist Level I Skills and advance autonomy in the first scrub surgical technologist role of the surgical team in complex surgical specialties in the clinical environment. The student will spend 24 hours each week, for a duration of six weeks, in the clinical setting advancing their skill set as the surgical technologist in the scrub role. Upon successful course completion, the student will be able to demonstrate competency in all aspects of Surgical Technologist Level II Skills of perioperative practice.

This course is to educate ST students in the clinical practice of surgical technology. This course is designed to provide the ST student with individualized surgical case experience in the scrub role of the surgical technologist. Emphasis is placed on demonstrating proficiency in skills necessary for participation in advanced specialty, surgical procedures. This course will afford the student the opportunity to build on skills learned in Surgical Technologist Level II Skillsand advance autonomy in the first scrub surgical technologist role of the surgical team in advanced surgical specialties in the clinical environment. The student will spend 24 hours each week, for a duration of ten weeks,in the clinical setting advancing their skill set as the surgical technologist in the scrub role at Surgical Technologist Level III. Upon successful course completion, the student will be able to demonstrate competency in all aspects of Surgical Technologist Level III Skills of perioperative practice and be aptly prepared for an entry level surgical technologist position in a clinical facility.
