CT State Community College Catalog 2023-2024

  • New students enrolling for the first time in Fall 2023 will begin as students of Connecticut State Community College under this catalog. 
  • Continuing students from one of the 12 community colleges will be transitioned into a CT State program in this catalog as of the start of the Fall 2023 term.

The Associate in Science Degree in Paramedic Studies is designed as an extension to the Paramedic Certificate program. Graduates of this program will be prepared to assume management-level careers in pre-hospital health administration. They will have learned the skills necessary to plan, implement and manage pre-hospital care. The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Instructor Option prepares the student to apply for CT certification as an EMS Instructor.

Career opportunities available for graduates of this program include employment as supervisors or managers of emergency medical services and as educational coordinators.

Learning Outcomes:

Both program options share the following outcomes. Upon successful completion of the paramedic program, the graduate will be able to demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate theoretical information relevant to the  role of entry-level paramedic. The graduate will:

  • Provide advanced emergency medical care for patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system
  • Integrate the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide advanced level patient care and transportation
  • Function as a member of the comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight
  • Perform patient care interventions including invasive and pharmacological interventions to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with acute out-of-hospital medical and traumatic emergencies
  • Utilize knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to develop advanced patient assessment strategies
  • Demonstrate enhanced written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate enhanced leadership and teamwork abilities

In addition to the above shared outcomes, the Paramedic Studies, Emergency Medical Services Instructor Option graduate will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of educational theory as it applies to EMS education
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach cognitive, psychomotor, and affective lessons within an EMS curriculum
  • Demonstrate the communication and organizational skills requisite of holding an EMS management position
  • Demonstrate an understanding of EMS program administration, CT-specific legal considerations, and record-keeping responsibilities
  • Demonstrate the ability to assess student performance in all domains of learning

The CT State Paramedic Studies program accreditation with The Committee on Accreditation for the EMS Professions requires the completion of the PMED 1011 PMED 1012 PMED 1013 , and PMED 2014  courses at Connecticut State Community College. No external credit shall be awarded to meet these course requirements.
