SURH 2210 - Pathophysiology/Pharmacology for the Surgical Technologist Credits: 3
This course is for the education of surgical technologists. The focus is on topics related to pathophysiology and pharmacology as identified in the current edition of the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology(ST). The ST student will be introduced to the basic concept of disease as a deviation from the body’s normal homeostatic state and its ability to function properly. Through discussion, analysis and research, the student will learn the anatomic and physiologic anomalies each body system undergoes in response to the disease process. The ST student will be introduced to the basics of pharmacology and anesthesia as it relates to the surgical technologist role in the Operating Room. The most important points of pharmacology/anesthesia will include drug handling, prevention of drug errors, a basic understanding of drug categories, important anesthesia concepts, types of anesthesia, complications/adverse reactions and the related perioperative role of the surgical technologist.
Prerequisite: BIO 2350 , admission to the MC (Manchester Campus) Hartford Hospital Surgical Technology Program Corequisite: SURH 2190 Previous SUR* 221
