MUS 1201 - Music Ear-Training I Credits: 1
This course covers the aural component of MUS 1101 . The goal of Ear Training I is to acquire the skills necessary to make intelligent and competent musicians. This course will focus on three major areas; sight singing, rhythmic reading, and dictation. Students are introduced to solfege and moveable “do” in major and minor keys, Curwen hand signs, stick notation, and score reading, and conducting. Students will also develop their aural skills with rhythm exercises, music dictations, interval singing, scale singing, chordal and ensemble singing. Pentatonic music and music in Major and minor tonalities will be explored.
Prerequisite: A basic understanding of notation before beginning this class is highly recommended. Successful completion of MUS 1100 is recommended before taking this course, but not required. Corequisite: MUS 1101 must be taken concurrently. This corequisite can only be overridden by permission of the instructor upon the successful completion of a placement test.
